In a recent dialogue in Ottawa, Mark Carney hailed a prospective free trade deal with India as transformative, while engaging in discussions with India’s commerce minister, Piyush Goyal. The focus of their talks was the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with both leaders expressing hope to finalize the agreement by the end of the year. Carney emphasized that such a deal could significantly benefit Canadian industries, particularly in energy, agriculture, technology, and education sectors.
Piyush Goyal, conveying greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighted the discussions aimed at enhancing long-term bilateral relations and expediting trade talks. The meeting also included Canada’s international trade minister, Maninder Sidhu, who confirmed that two negotiation rounds have been completed, with Canada poised to host the upcoming session.
Accompanying Goyal is a substantial business delegation from India, consisting of over 100 representatives, set to engage in trade and investment conversations in Toronto. This delegation underscores the collaborative effort towards fostering economic ties between the two nations.
During his visit to Canada, Goyal also held meetings with Canadian foreign minister Anita Anand and agriculture minister Heath MacDonald, focusing on expanding cooperation across varied sectors. This renewed engagement marks a positive shift in India-Canada relations, especially after the diplomatic strain in 2023, triggered by allegations concerning the death of Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. These accusations were denied by India under the former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The diplomatic atmosphere has improved since Mark Carney assumed office in 2025, facilitating re-engagement and the revival of CEPA negotiations. This development signals a significant step forward in strengthening the economic partnership between India and Canada.
