In a significant move to bolster their bilateral ties, Japan and India have decided to enhance cooperation in the realms of security, economic resilience, and cutting-edge technology. This decision followed a summit in New Delhi between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The leaders reiterated their dedication to maintaining a free and rules-based Indo-Pacific region, articulating concerns over issues such as economic coercion and the current tensions in the East China Sea and South China Sea.

The two nations have committed to fortifying their supply chains, especially in vital industries like semiconductors and critical minerals. This initiative aims to strengthen their economic foundations and mitigate vulnerabilities in these strategic sectors. Additionally, the partnership seeks to expand joint military exercises and enhance collaboration on naval vessel maintenance and the development of defense equipment. A notable aspect of this defense cooperation includes scheduling a “two-plus-two” meeting involving the foreign and defense ministers of both countries later this year.

On the economic front, Japanese and Indian enterprises have formalized 129 memorandums of understanding, signifying a substantial investment of approximately ¥2 trillion ($12.4 billion). These investments are targeted at sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, automotive manufacturing, and other advanced technologies. This wave of agreements underscores the growing economic synergy between the two nations.

Furthering their collaboration in emerging technologies, Japan and India have set a goal to enhance their partnership in artificial intelligence. A key element of this plan is the aim to bring 500 Indian AI specialists to Japan by 2030, to facilitate joint research and innovation efforts. This initiative reflects the deepening ties and shared vision of the two countries in harnessing the potential of AI to drive future advancements.
