India is actively engaging with United States officials to tackle concerns stemming from the recent changes in American visa regulations, which could impact Indian students and academic visitors. During a media briefing on Friday, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s External Affairs Ministry, stated that New Delhi is keeping a close eye on the developments and will persist in addressing issues with Washington whenever Indian nationals encounter challenges.
The revised regulations, introduced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, enforce more stringent residency requirements on holders of F, J, and I category visas. These visas are typically issued to international students, exchange visitors, and media professionals. The adjustments entail fixed durations of stay for non-immigrant visa holders in these categories, replacing the previous system that allowed many to extend their stay in the U.S. without ongoing federal supervision.
Under the new guidelines, the grace period for F visa holders has been shortened significantly. Students are now given 30 days, down from the previous 60, to depart the United States, transition to another institution, or alter their immigration status once their studies conclude. This change has raised concerns among the Indian community and has prompted Indian authorities to emphasize their commitment to aiding citizens in navigating these updated rules.
Indian officials have reaffirmed that visa and immigration policies are matters of national sovereignty but have reiterated their dedication to supporting Indian citizens abroad. They stress that minimizing any hardships created by the new U.S. regulations remains a priority for the Indian government.
