India and Switzerland have fortified their bilateral ties by signing five agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in trade, mobility, and technology. This development came as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin engaged in talks to broaden collaboration across various sectors, including defence, nuclear energy, and investment.
The agreements, signed on Monday, encompass areas such as migration and mobility, young professionals, transportation, research, innovation, and technology transfer. Both nations have committed to improving market access for Indian exports and fostering increased investment between them. This initiative coincides with the first anniversary of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which seeks to boost investment, trade, and employment between India and the EFTA nations.
India anticipates that the enhanced access to Swiss markets will bolster its exports of agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods. Meanwhile, Swiss firms are encouraged to invest in Indian sectors like biotechnology, life sciences, banking, insurance, food processing, and sustainability.
As part of the agreements, a migration and mobility partnership has been established to strengthen cooperation and tackle irregular migration and human trafficking. This includes provisions for multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years and renewable permits for students. Additionally, a dedicated agreement will allow up to 300 young professionals from each country annually to engage in temporary employment, gaining valuable professional and language experience.
In the realms of defence, nuclear energy, and technology, both countries have agreed to explore increased collaboration in military exchanges, defence production, and nuclear energy. They also plan to launch joint research projects in health, clean energy, and space, and promote cooperation in transportation technologies, sustainable infrastructure, electric vehicles, and tunnels.
The five agreements are poised to enhance partnerships between research institutions, businesses, and technology companies in both nations. Furthermore, during their discussions, India and Switzerland addressed global and regional issues, including the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, underscoring the importance of dialogue and diplomatic efforts to foster peace and stability.
