India and Poland are set to enhance their collaboration in key sectors such as defence, space, nuclear energy, and advanced technologies. This decision emerged from discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who aim to significantly boost economic interactions and double the current bilateral trade to approximately $12.6 billion by 2030.

The leaders identified joint development and production opportunities in strategic areas, including defence equipment, space technology, and nuclear energy. They also explored potential collaborations in critical minerals, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and fintech. Modi extended an invitation to Polish companies to engage in co-development and co-production with India, while Tusk emphasized the importance of diversifying access to critical minerals and strategic resources to bolster economic security.

A delegation of about 100 Polish companies is currently exploring business prospects in sectors such as defence, agriculture technology, pharmaceuticals, food processing, mining, infrastructure, and technology. Additionally, both nations plan to establish a bilateral startup bridge and foster partnerships in areas like critical minerals and coal gasification. Indian officials anticipate that the proposed India-European Union trade agreement will open up further opportunities for exports and investment.

Defence cooperation remains a top priority, with India and Poland working towards an agreement on the protection and exchange of classified information to support closer defence-industrial collaboration. They have agreed to establish a defence industry dialogue and a counterterrorism dialogue, also exploring joint manufacturing possibilities for military equipment, drones, and satellite technologies. This cooperation is expected to benefit from the broader strategic partnership between India and the European Union.

Regional and international issues were also on the agenda, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and developments in West Asia. Modi reiterated India’s backing for diplomatic efforts to achieve peace, while Polish officials welcomed India’s calls for a negotiated solution to the Ukraine crisis. The discussions highlighted the longstanding people-to-people connections between the two countries, with a nod to Poland’s assistance to Indian students evacuated from Ukraine in 2022 and India’s historical support to Polish refugees during the Second World War.

The meeting represents a significant step forward in strengthening India-Poland relations, as both governments strive to expand trade, enhance strategic cooperation, and build more resilient supply chains.
