Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot, recounted the harrowing moments when he was attacked by his co-pilot during a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, emphasizing the urgency of regaining control of the aircraft to ensure passenger safety. The incident unfolded as the Boeing 737, carrying 182 people, was making a steep descent, eventually leading to an emergency landing in Tabuk, north-western Saudi Arabia.

Currently recovering in a hospital in Abu Dhabi, Machchhar shared his experience during a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Despite suffering multiple injuries, the pilot managed to open the cockpit door, which allowed passengers to enter and restrain the co-pilot. The co-pilot, an Omani national, was detained in Saudi Arabia after the incident, and the motive behind the attack is still under investigation.

During the ordeal, Machchhar turned to the Hanuman Chalisa, a Hindu prayer, as a source of courage while he fought to protect the lives of those on board. He highlighted the significance of the prayer in helping him maintain focus and resilience during the critical moments in the cockpit.

Machchhar, originally from Mumbai, has been with flydubai for approximately four years. Before joining the airline, he accumulated extensive flying experience over a decade with SpiceJet. His commitment to piloting and passenger safety was evident in his decisive actions during the crisis.

The incident has drawn attention to the challenges and responsibilities pilots face in safeguarding their passengers, underscoring the need for thorough investigations to prevent similar occurrences in the future. As Machchhar continues his recovery, the aviation community closely follows developments surrounding the attack. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of piloting and the vital importance of emergency preparedness and response.
