IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has decided to temporarily halt its flights on the Mumbai-Manchester route starting August 31, 2026. This decision arises from enduring airspace restrictions that have prolonged flight durations, along with mounting operational costs. These challenges are reflective of broader issues in the international aviation sector, where geopolitical tensions, elevated fuel prices, and disrupted routes have escalated the expenses of long-haul operations.
In response to these difficulties, IndiGo will return one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft it had previously leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. The aircraft were initially acquired in early 2025 to support the airline’s expansion into the European market, a move made in anticipation of the arrival of its own Airbus A350 fleet. Despite the route suspension, IndiGo reassures that its other long-haul international flights will proceed as planned.
The airline acknowledges that its European expansion has successfully attracted strong customer demand, solidifying its footprint in critical international markets. Nonetheless, the combination of longer travel times due to airspace limitations, rising aviation turbine fuel costs, and currency exchange rate fluctuations has rendered the Manchester route economically unfeasible at present.
Abhijit Dasgupta, the Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management at IndiGo, described the suspension as an unfortunate but necessary measure given the current operational challenges. He emphasized the positive customer response to the service and expressed the airline’s commitment to resuming the route once more favorable conditions emerge. IndiGo is also actively investigating alternative means to maintain its partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways, part of its broader strategy for international growth.
Passengers impacted by the suspension will be informed in advance and will receive assistance in the form of alternative travel options or refunds, as applicable. The airline remains dedicated to minimizing the inconvenience caused to its customers while navigating these complex operational landscapes.
