In a move aimed at boosting regional connectivity and economic growth, the government of West Bengal is set to collaborate with the central government to develop a new airport in Purulia district. This initiative is part of the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, which is focused on enhancing air travel accessibility across India.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that an agreement will be signed on September 28, marking a significant step forward in the project. The groundwork for the airport has been laid, with the state government already applying for the necessary licensing. Discussions have also involved representatives from the civil aviation authorities, ensuring comprehensive planning and execution.
The introduction of an airport in Purulia is anticipated to be a catalyst for the district’s tourism, infrastructure, and industrial sectors. By improving air connectivity, the project aims to attract substantial investments and drive economic development in the region.
Beyond the airport project, the West Bengal government is actively seeking investment opportunities in Purulia. Prospective sectors for development include defense, steel, cement, and solar energy, with the potential to secure investments of approximately ₹1 lakh crore over the next year, according to Chief Minister Adhikari.
