The government of West Bengal has unveiled a new initiative to provide financial assistance to Rath Yatra committees across the state, offering ₹5 lakh each to 60 groups. This funding aims to support the restoration and upkeep of the historic wooden chariots used in the traditional Rath Yatra festivals. This marks a significant step as it is the first instance of the state directly funding Rath Yatra celebrations.
Speaking about the initiative, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari emphasized the importance of preserving these wooden chariots, many of which are several centuries old and in dire need of renovation. He expressed hope that the committees would utilize the financial aid for necessary repairs and long-term preservation efforts.
In addition to the financial support, the state government announced plans to enhance the experience for devotees participating in the 30-kilometer Shravan Yatra at Tarakeshwar, located in the Hooghly district. Helicopters will be deployed to shower flower petals over the pilgrims, adding a ceremonial touch to the event. Moreover, the government will establish Seva Kendras at 75 fair locations to offer essential services such as medical aid, police assistance, and clean drinking water to the participants.
Looking ahead, the state has ambitions to extend this financial support to more Rath Yatra committees in the coming years. In a broader effort to boost religious tourism and preserve cultural heritage, West Bengal is also investing ₹1,000 crore over the next three years in the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit. This project will focus on promoting pilgrimages, restoring historic temples, and enhancing the overall religious tourism sector in the region.
