Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia, aiming to enhance India’s strategic and economic ties with this key partner in the Indo-Pacific region. As the largest democracies in this area, India and Indonesia are both members of the G20 and are working to bolster collaboration across several sectors such as trade, technology, digital governance, healthcare, defense, and maritime security. This visit is particularly significant as it builds on Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to India in January 2025, where both nations celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations and signed various agreements in health, digital cooperation, maritime security, and cultural exchanges.
Despite the robust historical connections and shared interests, the bilateral trade between India and Indonesia is currently around $30 billion. Both countries are eager to unlock more economic potential, with India particularly interested in increasing its investment in Indonesia. Key areas of focus include critical minerals, manufacturing, renewable energy, and food security, all of which are seen as promising sectors for potential growth and collaboration.
A significant area of focus during Modi’s visit will be digital collaboration. Indonesia has shown interest in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and digital commerce initiatives, providing an opportunity for both countries to work together on advancing technology. They are also exploring partnerships in fields such as artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, digital payments, and support for small businesses, which are crucial for economic modernization and development.
Maritime security is another priority for both nations, with plans to enhance cooperation in the strategic Strait of Malacca, boost naval collaboration, improve maritime domain awareness, and expand defense-industrial partnerships. These efforts come at a time when Indonesia is seeking to diversify its defense suppliers, potentially opening new avenues for India’s defense sector to engage more deeply with Indonesia.
The visit is not only about strategic and economic interests but also about fostering stronger people-to-people connections. By promoting academic, business, and cultural partnerships, both countries hope to build a more comprehensive and long-term relationship. This approach aims to strengthen ties beyond governmental agreements, creating a foundation for sustained and meaningful engagement between the two nations.
