In the midst of ongoing tensions with Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Americans to tolerate a slight increase in gasoline prices, attributing it to the disruption of shipping through the crucial Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at a rally in New York, Trump emphasized that paying “a tiny little bit more” at the pump is a necessary sacrifice to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He also suggested the possibility of declaring the strait as U.S. territory following a potential victory over Iran.
Iran has strongly opposed Trump’s assertions, maintaining control over the waterway. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that Iran would persist in enforcing the blockade until the United States acknowledges its defeat. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed that Tehran has not yet decided to resume talks with the U.S., and insisted that shipping through the strait would remain halted unless Iran’s conditions are met.
The standoff has significantly impacted tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil and natural gas shipments. This uncertainty has led to higher crude prices, consequently driving up fuel costs. Currently, the average gasoline price in the U.S. stands at approximately $4.08 per gallon, marking a 29% increase from the previous year. Additionally, Brent crude prices are poised for a notable weekly rise.
Beyond the U.S., the economic ripple effects are being felt in Iran as well. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has attributed the country’s rising inflation to the U.S. blockade, coupled with sanctions and restrictions on Iranian oil exports.
While efforts to reach a ceasefire remain at an impasse, the Trump administration has signaled the possibility of imposing further financial measures against Tehran. The situation remains tense as both nations grapple with the economic and geopolitical ramifications of the conflict.
