This new feature is being released gradually, with users getting the chance to reserve a unique username before it becomes available globally later this year. Once fully implemented, individuals will be able to initiate chats using a username, eliminating the need to disclose their mobile numbers.
The username functionality will enable users to create a distinct handle within the app. To message someone, only their username will be required, safeguarding the privacy of their phone number. In cases where a preferred username is unavailable, WhatsApp will offer alternative suggestions using an integrated generator. Importantly, there will be no public directory for usernames, ensuring that only those who know the exact username can make contact.
To reserve a username, WhatsApp users should update their app and navigate to the following path: Settings → Account → Username. Notifications will be sent out as the feature becomes accessible in different regions. Given the app’s vast user base, the early reservation phase aims to mitigate the competition for popular usernames.
Additional privacy measures are included in the form of an optional “username key,” which provides an extra layer of security. This key can be shared separately, allowing users to control who is permitted to start a conversation with them. The design of this system caters to a wide range of users, including personal users, creators, businesses, and public accounts, making it easier for some to align their WhatsApp identity with existing handles on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
While the introduction of usernames marks a notable shift, WhatsApp has confirmed that this feature will remain optional. Users who prefer to continue using phone numbers can do so without any changes. As the rollout progresses, in-app notifications will alert users when the feature is available in their specific region.
