Malaysia is poised to send a team of DNA experts to assist in the identification of victims of the catastrophic floods and landslides that have recently struck Nepal. The Malaysian Foreign Minister, Mohamad Hasan, stated that the country is currently seeking Nepal’s approval to deploy these specialists. The DNA identification process is scheduled to commence once the ongoing search and rescue operations conclude. The objective is to match DNA from the recovered bodies with samples provided by the families of Malaysian citizens who have gone missing in the aftermath of these disasters.
In preparation for this critical mission, Malaysia has already gathered DNA samples from the relatives of 55 Malaysians who have not been accounted for since the natural calamities occurred. The urgency of DNA testing has been underscored by the fact that some of the recovered bodies had to be interred swiftly due to the limited availability of facilities, making genetic identification a crucial step in providing clarity for families.
The team assembled for this operation comprises 11 personnel and is equipped with an impressive array of 12.4 tonnes of rescue gear. This includes state-of-the-art detection instruments, advanced communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized equipment for tunnel rescue operations. Additionally, the team has brought along a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to aid in their efforts on the ground.
Malaysia is hopeful that the integration of search, rescue, and DNA identification efforts will be instrumental in locating the missing individuals and delivering much-needed closure to their families.
