BJP Plans Assam Rallies to Counter Congress Criticism of Democratic Institutions

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a series of rallies across the state from October 13 to October 31, organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). These rallies aim to counter what the BJP perceives as Congress’s attempts to weaken democratic institutions. Sarma, speaking in Guwahati, emphasized that the rallies would be held peacefully at district headquarters, focusing on reinforcing public trust in constitutional bodies and expressing support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The chief minister accused Congress and other opposition parties of politically challenging institutions such as the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. He criticized Congress’s stance against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, a process he deemed crucial for addressing issues related to voter lists and illegal immigration in Assam.

Sarma also targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of applying inconsistent standards to election results, depending on the winning party. He further criticized Gandhi’s actions related to the Supreme Court, asserting that constitutional institutions should remain free from political pressure.

The BJP stated that the planned rallies would focus on supporting democratic institutions while opposing Congress’s approach to electoral and constitutional matters. This initiative comes amid ongoing political tensions between the BJP and Congress over the independence of institutions, electoral processes, and immigration-related issues in Assam.
