TRAI Mandates Flexible 30-Day and Voice-Only Mobile Recharge Plans

by admin477351

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has implemented new regulations aimed at providing prepaid mobile users with more flexible and cost-effective recharge options. These changes, introduced under the Telecom Consumers Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2026, mandate telecom operators like Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone Idea to offer voice-and-SMS-only plans with validity periods of 30 days or less.

The updated rules stipulate that monthly plans should renew on the same date each month. In cases where a month does not have the corresponding date, the renewal will occur on the last day of that month. This ensures a consistent billing cycle for consumers, eliminating confusion over plan expiration dates.

In addition to short-term plans, operators are also required to provide at least one voice-and-SMS-only plan with a longer duration, matching the validity of their extended data-bundled plans. This initiative is designed to cater to customers who primarily use their phones for calls and text messages rather than mobile data, including senior citizens and those seeking more budget-friendly options.

These developments follow previous directives from TRAI in December 2024, which encouraged the expansion of voice-and-SMS-only offerings. The regulator observed that telecom operators had not yet fully implemented such plans across various validity periods, prompting the latest measures.

The introduction of these new recharge options is expected to enhance consumer choice, offering alternatives for users prioritizing voice and text services over data usage. By accommodating different user needs, TRAI aims to foster a more inclusive and versatile telecom market in India.
