In a significant move aimed at tackling the drug menace, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday unveiled the Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029 roadmap, designed to prevent the infiltration and exfiltration of narcotics across India’s borders. This comprehensive strategy targets three critical areas: reducing the supply of drugs, curbing their demand, and minimizing associated harms. Shah reiterated the government’s commitment to a synchronized national campaign against drug networks, which has been actively pursued since 2019.

Amit Shah detailed the multifaceted approach the government is employing, which includes the four-tier NCORD (Narcotics Coordination) mechanism, the establishment of Anti-Narcotics Task Forces across all states and Union Territories, and the creation of a national rehabilitation helpline. Additionally, mechanisms like the NIDAN database, which records narcotics offenders, and data-driven mapping of drug networks and hotspots, further solidify this robust framework.

Highlighting the achievements of enforcement agencies, Shah revealed that more than 29,968 kilograms of synthetic drugs, valued at over ₹19,600 crore, were seized between 2020 and July 2026. The minister also noted that from 2019 to July 2026, the total seizures of narcotic and psychotropic substances have exceeded 93.34 lakh kilograms, underscoring the scale of the operations undertaken to combat drug trafficking effectively.

Furthermore, Shah addressed the financial dimension of the drug trade, reporting that authorities have confiscated properties valued at ₹1,841 crore in 3,016 cases between 2024 and June 2026. These efforts target both the physical drugs and the financial networks sustaining drug trafficking activities. During his visit to Goa, Shah evaluated the state’s security preparedness, although he had to cut his visit short to return to Delhi.
