India has emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility along its border with China as a critical factor for the development of bilateral relations. This message was underscored during a meeting between India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. The encounter represented the 25th round of discussions between the nations’ special representatives, aimed at resolving the enduring boundary dispute. Central topics included advancing boundary delimitation, enhancing border management, and expanding cross-border cooperation.
Both countries reviewed the progress of their bilateral relations positively and explored strategies to maintain stability along the Line of Actual Control. They reaffirmed their commitment to a political resolution of the boundary issue, taking into account their long-term interests. This dialogue follows the 2024 understanding between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which sought to ease tensions in the Ladakh sector. Since this agreement, there has been a resumption of people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and border trade through designated routes.
Ajit Doval highlighted that the gradual normalization of bilateral ties is closely linked to maintaining peace along the border. Meanwhile, China expressed that the boundary issue should be appropriately placed within the broader context of their relationship. Although specific details regarding the demarcation of the disputed boundary were not disclosed, both nations agreed to continue their negotiations and have planned the next round of special representative talks in India in 2027.
This series of discussions gains additional significance as it precedes the anticipated visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September. The upcoming summit is expected to further efforts in stabilizing the bilateral relationship, emphasizing the importance of ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
