Delhi is set to enhance its river transport facilities with the launch of the “Namo Yamuna” ferry service, just in time for the Chhath Puja festivities from November 13 to 16. Announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, this initiative aims to provide a novel way for residents and visitors to experience the Yamuna River, connecting several key points along its banks.
The ferry service will commence operations between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, offering a scenic one-hour cruise covering approximately five kilometers of the river. During this journey, passengers will have the opportunity to enjoy picturesque views of the ghats and the lush natural landscapes that line the riverbanks. Tickets for this experience are expected to be priced at around ₹500 per person.
Chief Minister Gupta recently inspected the ferry at Sonia Vihar Sports Club and visited Sur Ghat, a location being developed as a family-friendly picnic spot for the Chhath Puja celebrations. The ghat will serve as a venue for worship and community gatherings, adding cultural significance to the ferry service.
The launch of the ferry service had been initially scheduled for February 20 but was delayed due to incomplete project work. The infrastructure supporting the ferry includes jetties equipped with boarding facilities, ticket counters, and waiting areas, ensuring a seamless experience for passengers.
The vessel, known as Island Boats 40 (IB 40), was constructed by Mumbai-based Inspiration Marine Pvt Ltd. It boasts a catamaran-style hull designed for stability and is well-suited for navigating the shallower sections of the Yamuna.
