President Donald Trump on Tuesday said his upcoming meeting with President Xi Jinping “is going to work out very well,” despite the US threatening new 100% tariffs on Chinese goods.
The talks are set for Thursday in South Korea, where both leaders will attend the APEC summit. Trump, speaking in Japan, called it a “big meeting.”
The context is tense, as the US tariff threat (set for November 1) was a direct response to China’s new controls on rare earth exports.
This recent flare-up, which also includes US port fees and Chinese countermeasures, has ended a brief truce in the trade war.
Trump, however, remained optimistic, calling the planned meeting “fantastic” and “great for everybody.”
